Rangelands

This Saskatchewan rangeland health assessment workbook on native grassland was completed in 2026 in true Saskatchewan fashion through teamwork and building on the good work of our neighbours. We appreciate  our large working group and multiple funders for making it happen.

In 2021, Saskatchewan’s rangeland community initiated an update of the original version. A revision of the science-based assessment method improves clarity and consistency between users and fosters collaboration between Saskatchewan’s diverse rangeland stakeholders.

It is intended as a tool for livestock producers, resource managers, agency staff, energy companies, protected area managers and anyone with an interest in the conservation and maintenance of rangeland plant communities to assess rangeland health and use rangeland in a sustainable manner.

Rangeland Health Assessment Field Workbook - Forest

Rangeland is land supporting indigenous or introduced vegetation that is either grazed or has the potential to be grazed and is managed as a natural ecosystem, including grassland, grazeable forestland, shrubland, pastureland and riparian areas. This workbook originally contained sections on native grassland and forest range health assessment methodology.

As we updated the native grassland assessment in 2026, the older version of certain sections were removed.

It is intended as a tool for livestock producers, resource managers, agency staff, energy companies, protected area managers and anyone with an interest in the conservation and maintenance of rangeland plant communities to assess rangeland health and use rangeland in a sustainable manner.
